Ole Miss Rebels Seek Road Win in Tournament Opener

Ole Miss had a solid season, winning 20 games but the mediocrity of the SEC kept them out of the NCAA tournament. The Rebels finished 10-8 in the regular season in the conference: perhaps another win or two in the conference tournament could have changed things. Ole Miss was in a tight game the whole way but couldn’t make the clutch plays late as Arkansas had the final lead change in the game with 1:28 to go. The Rebels shot 37.8 percent from the field and hit only 8 of 28 three point attempts in addition to 8 of 14 at the line. That overshadowed solid defense that saw Ole Miss hold Arkansas to 36.5 percent shooting and a 48-39 rebounding edge. The Razorbacks did convert 20 of 23 free throws, which proved critical. Terence Davis had 26 points and nine rebounds in the loss to lead Ole Miss.

Ole Miss is 69th in the nation in scoring offense as they put up an average of 77.7 points per game. The Rebels are excellent on the glass, ranking 22nd with 39.5 boards a night and are 231st in assists with 12.7 per game. Ole Miss is below average on the defensive end of the floor as they rank 266th in the nation as they allow 76.1 points per game. The Rebels are shooting just 42 percent from the field this season. Ole Miss is averaging 7.7 three point field goals per game while shooting 34.5 percent from beyond the arc. Deandre Burnett scores a team leading 16.7 points a game for the Rebels. Sebastian Saiz is a double-double machine with 14.9 points plus 11.2 rebounds a night, Terence Davis chips in 14.5 points plus 5.3 boards a contest and Cullen Neal contributes 9.1 points along with 2.3 assists a game. Things thin out quickly as only Rasheed Brooks, Justas Furmanavicius and Breein Tyree contribute more than 3.5 points a night other than the previous quartet.

Monmouth Hawks Look to Make Noise in NIT

Monmouth was rolling along with their extended win streak and held a 17 point lead in the game against Siena before things fell apart. That dumped the regular season MAAC champion out of the tournament and out of March Madness. Monmouth allowed 64 points in the second half to Siena as they couldn’t stop the Saints. The Hawks shot 51.6 percent from the floor to Siena’s 53.6 percent and lost the rebounding battle 32-21. Three point shooting proved important as Siena was 10 of 18 from long range while Monmouth was 5 of 18 from beyond the arc. Justin Robinson led the Hawks with 22 points in a losing effort.

The Hawks are a very good offensive unit as they are ranked 26th in scoring offense with 81.2 points per game. Monmouth is 43rd in the nation in rebounding with 38.8 boards a game and 249th in assists with 12.4 per night. The Hawks are below average on the defensive end of the floor as they allow 73.1 points a game. Monmouth shoots 43.8 percent from the floor as a team on the year. The Hawks average 8.7 three pointers per night while shooting 37 percent from beyond the arc. Justin Robinson leads Monmouth with 19.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and 4.7 assists a night. Micah Seaborn contributes 13.2 points a night while Je’lon Hornbeak chips in 11.7 points plus 4.3 rebounds a contest. Chris Brady, Austin Tilghman, Collin Stewart and Josh James each put up at least 4.1 points a night.

  • Hawks are 6-0-1 ATS in their last 7 Tuesday games

Monmouth was cruising right along before the loss to Siena but the Hawks are still a very good, experienced team. The Hawks are 13-1 at home on the year, while Ole Miss has gone just 4-6 as the visiting team. Yes, Ole Miss played in a better conference this season but there is a lack of depth for the Rebels. Monmouth is one of those battle tested mid-major teams that has dealt with top level competition. Playing at home, give the Hawks the edge to advance to the second round.
