It’s a Midwest Region first round matchup of the NCAA Tournament coming from the capital city of California. The 11th seeded Rhode Island Rams are on the road as they take on the sixth-seeded Creighton Bluejays Friday afternoon. Rhode Island closed the season with eight straight wins, including a 70-63 win over VCU in the Atlantic 10 Tournament final Sunday. Creighton split their last 10 games, capped with a 74-60 loss to #1 Villanova in the Big East Tournament final Saturday. The Bluejays won the lone meeting between the team, 74-73, in a first round NIT matchup back on March 18, 2008.

Rhode Island Rams Seek Ninth Straight Win

Rhode Island got hot at the right time as their win in the Atlantic 10 title game gave them the automatic bid and gave the conference three bids. The Rams finished tied for third in the Atlantic 10 with a 13-5 mark before winning the conference tournament. Rhode Island led by 13 at the half and held VCU off the rest of the way to get the win. The Rams shot 44.4 percent from the field and hit 8 of 20 three point attempts in the game. Rhode Island held VCU to 31.3 percent shooting, including 4 of 14 from beyond the arc, to help overcome a 47-36 rebounding disadvantage. Jared Terrell led the Rams with 20 points in the win.

The Rams are an average team offensively as they are 173rd in the nation scoring 73.5 points a game. Rhode Island is 91st in rebounding with 37.5 boards a night and tied for 174th with 13.5 assists per contest. Rhode Island is good on the defensive end of the floor. The team is 32nd in the nation in scoring defense by allowing 64.9 points per game. The Rams shoot 45.3 percent from the floor. Rhode Island averages 6.4 three pointers per game and is hitting 33.8 percent from beyond the arc. Hassan Martin is second on the team with 14.1 points and seven rebounds per contest. Jared Terrell chips in 12.5 points a night while E.C. Matthews contributes a team leading 14.9 points plus 4.2 boards a game. Kuran Iverson, Jeff Dowtin, Jarvis Garrett and Stanford Robinson are the only other players that score more than four points a game for the Rams.

Creighton Bluejays Look to Pick Up First Round Win

Creighton is making their first NCAA Tournament appearance in three years and hope to pick up a win. The Bluejays were up and down in the stretch run and fell short in the Big East title game against #1 Villanova. Creighton trailed by 14 at the half to Villanova and could only trade baskets the rest of the way. The Bluejays shot 41.4 percent from the field in the game but hit only 6 of 24 three point attempts while going 6 of 9 at the free throw line. Creighton was stung by 17 turnovers while allowing Villanova to shoot 46.3 percent from the floor. Cole Huff and Marcus Foster each had 13 points to lead the Bluejays in the loss.

The Bluejays are an elite offensive unit as they are 19th in the nation in scoring offense with an average of 82.1 points per game. Creighton is 229th in the nation in rebounding with 34.9 boards a night and is 10th with 17.3 assists per contest. Creighton is mediocre on the defensive end of the floor as the team ranks tied for 188th in scoring defense by allowing 72.5 points a game. The Bluejays are shooting a scorching 50.8 percent from the floor on the year, which is good for third in the nation. Creighton connects on a sizzling 39.9 percent from beyond the arc and splashes 8.7 three pointers a game. Marcus Foster leads the team with 18.3 points per game. Khyri Thomas chips in 12.4 points plus 5.7 boards a night, Justin Patton contributes 13.1 points and 6.2 boards while Maurice Watson Jr. was good for 12.9 points and 8.5 assists per game. Cole Huff, Toby Hegner, Zach Hanson and Isaiah Zierden each put up at least 4.9 points a game.

Trends:

Rhode Island

  • Rams are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games following a straight up win
  • Rams are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall
  • Rams are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record

Creighton

  • Bluejays are 1-8-1 ATS in their last 10 NCAA Tournament games
  • Bluejays are 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 NCAA Tournament games as a favorite
  • Bluejays are 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 NCAA Tournament games as a favorite of 0.5-6.5

This is a contrast of styles as Rhode Island relies on their tough defense while Creighton likes to run and gun their way past teams. Of course, you’re only as good as you’ve been recently. In that respect, Rhode Island has ripped off eight straight wins to get here while Creighton was a .500 team in their last 10 games. The Bluejays simply aren’t the same team without Watson Jr. running the offense. Creighton put together a solid showing in the Big East Tournament but Rhode Island has momentum right now. Look for the Rams to take advantage of that as they steal one.
